- 426 New breast cancer cases treated per year
- 19 Breast multidisciplinarity team members
Clinical Director: Ivan Turcan, MD
Since November 2009, a multidisciplinary breast unit has been operating in Banska Bystrica. It is the first facility of this kind in the Slovak Republic. The core team works based on interdisciplinary cooperation to create an individual treatment plan for each patient. On average, 260 cases are treated for breast cancer yearly. The breast unit performs all the diagnostic steps, including vacuum-assisted biopsy under stereotactic control. Surgical treatment includes oncoplastic surgery, WGL, ROLL and SNOLL procedures for pre-operative non-palpable lesions localisation. When mastectomy is indicated, we offer skin-sparing mastectomy or nipple-sparing mastectomy with immediate reconstruction (indicated cases). Axillary staging is performed with Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy. The complex therapy includes pre-operative and adjuvant systemic treatment, radiotherapy, locally advanced and metastatic breast cancer treatment, and rehabilitative and psychological support.
